Up at 6am and packed and ready to go, we had a lovely buffet breakfast at 7am after a short walk around the hotel grounds and some yoga. We had a group meeting at 8am then boarded a minivan for our journey to Cienfuegos. Our first stop was at the Bay of pigs for a snorkel at the beach where we saw many beautifully coloured fish in the clear water. We also had a quick snorkel in a sink hole that was 70m deep. We had a quick lunch of rice and vegetables then headed to a museum that told the story of the events of the US backed invasion. While there we met a couple from Holland in their 70s who were cycling around Cuba for the next 2 months.
From the Museum it was a 50km drive to Cienfuegos. We passed many rice and sugar cane fields. The rice had been harvested and the workers were drying it out on the road before bagging it. It was an amazing site to see. We were able to see most of the process along our journey including the bagging process.
Once we arrived in Cienfuegos we were allocated our casa particulares (the rooms in peoples houses that they let out) then met for an orientation tour. The walk took us through the main street and down to the central park which was surrounded by French colonial style buildings which had ben restored in the 90s. There was the municipal building, a school and a theatre all which looked magnificent. We then headed down to the water and back to the main street. We were all hungry so ended up having dinner at a new Paladar on the main street. The meal was delicious. We had wontons, soup, beef steak with gorgonzola, rice and beans and salad finished off with icecream all for 10CUC equivalent to $10.
